At Death’s Door

I opened At Death’s Door and discovered that I was almost done with the first round of edits. These were mainly typos, autocorrect issues, and some formatting. The story is now on my phone in pdf form and I’m going to give it a read to check the global edits. This includes adding things that I couldn’t during the initial writing, going back and revisiting all descriptions, and such on and so forth.

I found a premade cover today that I quite like the look of, one from someone Beth has used in the past. They’re even offering to do the wraps now! Beth had to make her own… or maybe Beth didn’t read the entire site like she lectured me on doing several times. She gets like that sometimes.

So I need to rush through and get the edits set up so that I know the approximate length of the print book to get the cover ordered. Once I have the additions to it and the cover on order I’ll run back and start over as if I haven’t done any edits at all.

Which means a read and mark down edits. Then a read to make certain I didn’t create a typo in the mean time, because I do that because I’m stupid. Then through a grammatical editing program which does all right. Then another read to make certain I didn’t make a typo again, because I do that because I’m stupid.

Then I’m going to ask for a beta reader.

While they have the book I’ll read it again in the freaked out way I do. Which is basically as follows:

OH GOD SOMEONE IS READING MY BOOK WHAT ARE THEY READING WHAT DID I DO OH GOD WHY DID I DO THAT THERE’S A COMMA MISSING RIGHT THERE IM STUPID AND SHOULD JUST GIVE UP.

No punctuation whatsoever, just screaming at the top of my lungs inside my head as I start ripping it apart for more errors.

As Beth says, the editor in me hates the writer in me.

At Death’s Door

At Death’s Door was titled ‘Vampire’ until just a few chapters ago. This is written on my phone and will be extensively edited on a computer. Or, edited as any of my works are. There are two more books to be written, though I’ve not dabbled much in the plot of those so I can’t even give away the ending!

Vampires come out to humans and interviews are set up. Many humans are still skeptical as the vampires haven’t given physical proof besides some historical records. Those doing the interviews expect fluff and a little grief stricken darkness. A smidge of “oh, how killing mortals pains me!”

Most interviewers get just that. Boring vampires with boring lives (or at least edited for mass consumption) then there’s Quin.

Who probably shouldn’t have ever been on the list of interviewees. Like. Ever.

Prototype

The following is an excerpt of a world being labelled Prototype. The story’s tags would be: m/f, romance. The genre is sort of caught between sci-fi/fantasy.

This world, if explored would be open to all genders and sexualities. Which is why I kind of want to play with it. Other stories ‘suggested’ by the muses would follow this one in timeline and involve: m/f, m/m, m/m/f, m/m/m, D/s. The only thing they haven’t tossed at me yet is a f/f but just mentioning it, they’ll probably conjure six of those to explore as well.

Vacation

Tomorrow starts my week off. Dorian is coming back, which is really exciting for me, but the prospect of no writing or work is driving me crazy. What do I do with all my free time? Just stare at the wall?

Do you know how bare my walls are?

The last time I really looked around was a couple of weeks ago, when I started building my office. Once the desk is together, I’ll move the laptop and TV in there. I don’t entertain much, the office is really an extension of my bedroom so… yeah. I keep sitting at the desk and filling out the planner a bit.

Recently I’ve been writing up information for D.o.t.A. Most of the plot is kind of written out already, so I can just refer to that when re-writing.

I feel like Rachel needs to either shut up or change her view a bit. Goddamn it, woman, you grew up in that world. It’s not a surprise!

Today I sat down to try to pound out a couple of possible titles. The ones that are sticking out are actually just the names. Rachel and Morgan.

Which actually kind of explains why the second book doesn’t seem to have Rachel there a whole lot. It’s all about what Morgan is doing, for which Rachel can’t see most of it.

I like the premise of this world built males being the betters and in control, but out of the public eye, the males are trying to bring back the females of their kind because they crave women who can kick their asses.

Enter Rachel, who’s father was in the military and taught all his daughters how to fight. And of course Rachel, who is bitter and cranky, with a bunch of righteous anger directed at the Alphas.

“She hit me. I’m bruised! I almost passed out. Only reason I didn’t was because she’s a leftie and couldn’t get the angle right with how I was holding her.”

“You’re the moron who left yourself wide open to an attack.”

“Only because women never hit us. Now I’m all confused, maybe it was the blow to my head.”

Editor’s Block

I’m not editing or writing. It’s taking a really long time to get anything out or to get motivated for writing. Today I visited Beth and she showed me how to Google myself.

I know, I know, how did I not know how to Google myself? Well, the how is pretty obvious, but it never occurred to me to do that before.

Beth found one of her books on Ebay, then all kinds of links that she didn’t know about. Including a tweet she hadn’t realized had been posted at her. Then she handed me her laptop and told me to do the same for myself.

Fun… I exist online, whoo! Except the first thing that popped up was my blog, which I haven’t updated in forever. That got me a cuff upside the head.

To which I cuffed Beth back because she hasn’t updated in longer.

The third link down was my Goodreads page, which has only attached to 36 books I’ve read because I couldn’t recall the others. I stopped, bit my bottom lip and basically moaned.

When was the last time I read a book?

When was the last time I read a good book?

I need to get a good book. I’d like some Romance with a twist of fantasy. None of that bear or wolf pack stuff either. Some good, honest fantasy without vampires (any variation of that spelling) but plenty of smut.

Or I could pick up the novel of a big time traditional author. Maybe reading a book or two will get me back on the editing and rewriting the last book. Something I desperately need to do.

Contract Taken and Contract Broken are almost completed for editing. I’m trying to go through the first edit for Contract Renewed but it takes a lot of re-writing because I skipped out on an important thing so I have to flush it all out and fix it all. Which is fine, the re-writes will make it so much more … interesting.

If only I could get motivated. I don’t know, maybe I’m kidding myself with the editing them all as one and I should put up the first for pre-order and keep working on the last one. Should I do that?

Beth keeps telling me to shut up and do that. Dorian just looks at me the way he does and then the writing gets put off for a while longer.

Suppose if I’m going to do the pre-order and all, I’ll have to contact my cover artist and ask her very nicely to get the covers done. Then however long it takes her to complete the covers is however long it takes and that’s just more time for me to beat my head on a wall about this re-write.
